To John J. Anderson, New York City. Answering his correspondent's question, he replies that he expects a bill for the admission
of California as a state to "pass Congress by the first of August; ... Of her admission, during the present session, I scarcely
entertain a doubt."
To Gilbert Davis. Seeking "to do justice to a political opponent who is now in his grave", Fillmore denies that "President
Polk was heartless and cold", indicating that both General Taylor and Fillmore were entertained graciously by Polk at the
White House before Polk left it.
